Meehan Praises TSA Decision Revoking Knives on Planes Policy

Press Release

Date: June 6, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Patrick Meehan (PA-07) today issued the following statement regarding an announcement by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Administrator John Pistole that the TSA will abandon a policy allowing pocket knives and other small blades aboard commercial aircraft:

"I'm pleased Administrator Pistole has put first the safety and security of the millions of Americans who fly every day. I wrote to him in April asking for a complete review of the policy and asked that he seek input from pilots and flight attendants -- the people most at risk from a loosening of the security restrictions. Their concerns were clearly heard and I'm pleased the TSA reversed the decision and will not implement this policy."

Rep. Meehan sent a letter to Administrator Pistole on April 4, 2013, expressing his concern that the decision to allow pocket knives was made without properly consulting the relevant stakeholders.

Meehan also voted for a bipartisan amendment, which passed the House yesterday, prohibiting federal funding from being used to implement this policy.
